NEW RELEASE:
Slavestate 641A
Narcissist
CSR-003 Digital Download/Casette Tape

About the release:

It is characteristic to the point of cliche that industrial music music forms in chaos and collapse. Slavestate 641A was formed in the final moments of what we saw as the complete collapse of a scene we had been a part of for years, and had attempted to help foster. It was our last abandonment of punk after years of stretching and tearing the form in Robocop. Ashley and I thrived in extremes and decided to write and record the first Slavestate E.P. Masochist in a marathon session of music, lyric and software writing, instrument building and recording. We recorded our vocals underwater using custom microphones, recorded all of our vocals using a contact mic on a soda can, and generated our lyrics using software I created for parsing and arranging text.

For Narcissist, we attempted to recreate that process by recording in an unheated room, in subzero temperatures, again without stoping or sleeping. We recorded all of our vocals through a contact microphone we had frozen in a block of ice. The string portions were recorded by cutting through the strings of a baritone guitar with an electric shaver. Interestingly, the mix took far longer than Masochist, I kept layering samples, raising and lower tracks, and building little devices to overdub the synth parts. At one point I recorded 100 open chords on my guitar, detuning between each take, and then created software to play these back as indeterminate clusters, as a means of altering the percussion.

In the midst of this year and a half or so of mixing, Ashley and I met up again, recording a new track focused on power tools and metal percussion. Once again, we loaded up with a twelve pack of moxie and recorded another track in a marathon session. The lyrics and concepts for the album were taken from a series of essays in a clinical psychology text titled “The Threat of Impending Disaster”.

During the time, Laugh Now Records, the label that put out Masochist, had been selling copies of the EP while refusing to provide us copies of our own album. I am extremely excited to finally have Slavestate 641A return on cassette after years of languishing.
